Fifty-eight million dogs and sixty-two million cats are thought to exist in North America and most unfortunately, every year thousands of them will drown needlessly. Due to the fact that many people do not report these drownings, there is no way to know exactly how many pets actually die this way. Since 99% of all dogs are able to swim, we typically are not concerned when our dogs are playing at the water’s edge at the lake or around our swimming pool. Dogs, and even some cats, grow tired after swimming short distances in water. When they are not able to find purchase anywhere with their paws, a debilitating panic sets in quickly, and this is what will cause them to drown. Our beloved pets are not the only victims of drowning, devoted pet owners will risk their own lives to go after their animals after they have fallen into a frozen lake or a swiftly flowing river.

What ways can we prevent our pets from drowning? Here are a few valuable tips:

1. Do not make the assumption that your dog is able to swim.

2. Keep a close eye on your dog especially if he or she is older. They cannot swim quite as long or as far as they were once able to.

3. Never toss a cat or a dog into the water. They will panic from the initial shock.

4. Purchase a canine floatation device (CFD) or pet life jacket for your dog or cat. If they are going to be near water, put it on them. Often a pet may fall off a dock or out of a moving boat without our knowledge.

5. Solar blankets and pool covers look like solid surfaces to your pet. If your animals are around the pool, it is a good idea to remove them if possible to avoid them walking onto it.

6. Put up a pet safety gate to impede a pet’s access to the pool area.

7. Make sure that your pet is not able to get into your neighbor’s pool area.

8. Install a pool alarm for a pond or your pool.

9. Don’t let your pet play or walk near fast flowing water.

10. Keep your pets away from frozen lakes & rivers.

Seeing your pet drown and the awful guilt that is associated with it can be overwhelming and very difficult or impossible to recover from. I strongly encourage you to have a look around your property for obvious water hazards. Whether it is summer or winter, you need to drown proof your home as well as your vacation property NOW. If your pet is going to be anywhere near water, make sure they are wearing a canine floatation device or pet life jacket.

The first thing to consider when purchasing a swimming pool cover is selecting the right size. Although there is much temptation to choose a standard cover that claims to fit any size pool, it is best to get a custom cover for your pool.

Fitting your pool will require that you make sure all the angles of your pool (including the steps and other areas) are under the pool cover. Since rarely are two pools in a neighborhood the same, you are wasting your time with a standard fitted cover. These allow the debris you are protecting your pool from to find its way into your pool.

Also, pool covers can be purchased in the form of safety covers, automatic covers or water bag covers.

The advantage of a water bag cover is the weighted bags that accompany it to keep your swimming pool cover in place during heavy winds and rains. The water bags are placed about two to three feet apart and can be placed inside the pool or on top of the cover.

Be sure to check the stitching in your cover as well. There will likely be some damage naturally to the cover because it withstands the winter. Keeping a little bit of water on top of the cover will help protect it from wind and other elements. The stitching on your cover, though, should be more than 10 x 10. It is a little more expensive than lesser stitching, but well worth it.

Remember to buy a swimming pool cover that is at least four feet larger than your pool. This ensures that your entire pool will be securely covered. Taking this small, but necessary measure will ensure that you extend the life of your pool.

The 2010 Vancouver Olympics Are Just Around The Corner

The clock is clicking down to the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Canada has been buzzing about these games for the past few years and now Vancouver is the final rush to make sure everything is ready as they prepare to welcome the world. Vancouver was awarded these games over 5 years ago and has been making preparations ever since. This will be the second time Canada has played host to this spectacular event.

Held every fourth year, the Winter Games are an international spectacular. This season the Games will commence in the middle of February and stretch over 16 excitement filled days. One day one will be a moving and somber opening ceremony and on day 16 will be a fun and glitzy closing ceremony. The days in between will be filled with such events as alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, figure skating, bobsled, ice hockey, ski jumping, freestyle skiing, and speed skating..

The Vancouver Olympic Games will be held in the City of Vancouver as well as a number of different places around Vancouver. Vancouver is located on the Pacific Ocean in the lower mainland portion of the province of British Columbia. The other British Columbia towns and villages that will assist in hosting the Winter Games are Richmond, Whistler, and West Vancouver.

The first ever Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France in 1924. These were the first Games dedicated solely to athletic pursuits on snow and ice. Prior to these games, hockey and figure skating had included as events in the Summer Olympics. Since that time, the Games have been held every four years with the exception of 1940-48 due to World War II. From 1924 until 1992, the Winter Games and Summer Olympics were always held in the same year. In 1992, in an attempt for a larger audience, the Winter Games split from the Summer Games.

Fewer countries participate in the Winter Games than participate in the Summer Olympic Games. As a result the Winter Games tend to be hosted by repeat countries. Seven countries in total have already hosted a combined 17 Winter Olympic Games with France and the United States hosting 7 Games between them. After Vancouver, the next Winter Olympics will be hosted by Russia. This will be Russia’s first time to host the Winter Olympic Games.

In a matter of months, the world will turn its attention to the City of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The Olympic Games are one of the most watch athletic events in the world. The world will hold its collective breath as we watch bobsledders and skiers defy bone crushing speeds and while figure skaters bring beauty to the ice. The world will be watching the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.

Proper Ways to Swim and Get Noticed by Girls

Introduction: Swimming is not only considered as the best exercise but apart from that it is also a very fun activity that anyone can possibly do. In reality, not everyone knows how to swim. So if you are one of them but can’t afford to hire a professional swimming trainer to teach you then don’t be hopeless. There are many ways to be trained to swim so you won’t always have to be stuck on your chair the whole day when everyone else is enjoying. Aside from that, you can also be noticed by girls once you’re there skinny deep with them on the sea and not on the shore.

What you’ll need: a controlled environment for swimming, some swimwear, goggles, sunblock.

Difficulty: 5

Step 1. Look for a friend to accompany you and coach you. You may be embarassed to ask anyone for help and you can learn swimming all by yourself - but having a friend along is a better and safer choice.

Step 2. Dress up.

Step 3: Lather some sun block to your entire body for sun’s protection.

Step 4. Find a pool or a beach where you can practice.

Step 5: Head to the shallow area first. Do not immediately dip to deep areas. The ideal water level should be just within your waist level so that water will be sufficient enough for your practice.

Step 6. Place your hands on the edges or sides of the pool, or if you’re in the beach, then hold on to your companion (make sure this is somebody that you trust). While grabbing hold of the surface/person, dip your entire body (this includes your head as well) into the water. Keep your head steady and hold your breath.

Step 7. Grab on to the poolside (or your friend’s hand) and start letting your legs and feet float begind you. Start kicking by using your thigh muscles, and keep your knees straight. Imagine a ballerina pointing her toes. That’s exactly what you should look like, except that you’re underwater.

Step 8. Practice the whole kicking routine until you get the feel out of it. The goal is to do this easily and not look like a distraught ballerina.

Step 9. As you become more at ease with the kicking, you can now start to bring one of your arms up in front of you. As you fully stretch it out, cup your hand and then pull back, bringing the arm back to your side. Repeat with the other arm. You will begin to feel yourself pushing through the water with the help of your arms and legs.

Step 10. Practice doing this over and over again until you get to move in the correct rhythm. Make sure to move your head and body a bit to the side in order to breathe.

Step 11: Stop when you are already tired. You can then try to float. Do this by starting to relax first and start kicking your legs until you propel thrust through the water.

Step 12. Repeat all of these steps for your consecutive practices. You will eventually learn to swim.

Tips:

- Aside from the one you will be learning, there are other swimming syles that you can eventually learn later on.

- Your pulls should be legnthy in order to propel you faster through water.

Warnings:

- If you feel like you’re about to panic, stop, relax and try again.

- Floating is important so you must learn how to.

- Have someone look after you while you are trying to learn how to swim and stay away from deep water areas.

Deep Sea Fishing: Knowing The Tides

It might seem weird but a comprehensive knowledge of the tides and their effect on your fishing area can pay big dividends. In fact, it is considered a major key to successful deep sea fishing by experts. Most fishing guides and charter-boat captains know this secret. They make detailed studies of currents, tides, and how they have an effect on fishing on their area.

However, it is depressing to say, that a lot of amateur deep sea anglers give very little thought to these important facts. In deed, some anglers do not pay any attention to them at all. Then they ask themselves why other fishermen catch all the fish and they do not. Nevertheless, there are those who do comprehend that tides affect their fishing, but they do not know exactly how or why.

These anglers usually waste hours trolling, casting and sinker bouncing even when the tide is not right. However, the deep sea angler who knows his tides can pick in advanced the most favourable fishing times and concentrate his efforts during those times, which means that you can have fewer wasted days and catch more fish during your deep sea fishing trips.

They also vary with regard to the degree that they rise or fall. The highest tides occur when the Sn and moon are situated on the same side of the Earth in a direct line. This kind of tide is called a “Spring tide”, which occurs during new-moon and full-moon periods.

During these periods, both low and high tides are higher than their usual level. However, during the last and first quarter phases of the moon, tides do not rise or fall that much. These are called as “neap tides”.

So which of these tides are helpful and which are not? To start off with, most experts believe that moving tides or currents are usually more productive than when there are no currents or tides. Therefore, a “slack” tide will rarely produce a good catch.

You can take even more help from tides by knowing when to go. The time in which an incoming tide starts is considered one of the most productive periods for fishing, especially if you are targeting game fish like bluefish, striped bass, channel bass, and weakfish.

During the periods of slack water, small bait fish are apt to scatter, and having a lack of strong currents to contend with, they are able to swim faster and therefore escape their predators.

However, when tides start moving, such small bait fish are at the mercy of strong rips and current. Therefore, they are easier to find and catch for stripers and other kinds of game fish. When an outgoing tide begins is another good time to fish, simply for the same logic. In general, the change of tide, whether it be low or high, is really the best time to do your fishing.

Designing A Comfortable Mascot Costume to Wear During the Games

When hearing the word “Mascot”, the majority of people think about sports and a silly giant chicken walking around. The person donning the Mascot Costume is seen during the game, but most of us don’t think about what is involved in the design a comfortable mascot costume.

Mascots are so commonplace that they have their own fan base. These fans cheer them on when they enter the stage or field. Even the teams are associated with the mascot.

Most mascots are there for entertainment. They may come out before the game, during a break or to entertain the crowd. There are those who go to the events just for the mascot. If the game isn’t going to good for the team, mascots are able to rally the fans and create a fun atmosphere. Their behavior is so outrageous sometimes that the fans remember them more than they do plays of the game.

Mascot costumes are heavy and not well ventilated. While the person inside seems to move around easily, when the costume is made, the person who is going to wear it has to be taken into consideration.

Teams with larger budgets often spend more money on the costumes to have them made out of a light weight material so the person inside can breathe easier. The construction of the costume will also affect how easily the person is able to move around and how long it can be worn. The person who becomes a mascot must possess strength, and agility to be able to perform the job.

When designing a mascot costume, the climate conditions should be considered. The costume should allow for the adding or removing of material according to the weather to keep the mascot warm or cool.

Fiberglass is often used to build the head because it is light weight. Also take into account the persons need to be able to see.
