Luxury Caribbean Cruises

March 8th, 2010
by Owen Jones

Vacationing on a cruise liner is rightly considered to be elite and luxurious. It is certainly the best kind of vacation that I have ever had. The luxury far surpasses staying in a five star hotel. On the other hand, it is like an elite all inclusive holiday, because once on board, all the entertainment and all your meals are free. Alcoholic drinks must be paid for, but then they are duty free.

If you have never been on a cruise before you really must try it. I would not recommend it as a family vacation, but I have seen families on cruises. Cruising might suit a family with older children or you might find a cruise which is planned with children in mind. However, in my experience, your average cruiser is over 50 and married.

I know that they do 18-30 cruises and all kinds of themed cruises, but if you just go on a normal cruise, most of your fellow passengers will be older. Many of them are celebrating something too - retirement, Golden Wedding Anniversary, 70th birthday, that sort of thing. These people want a relaxing time and do not really want children running around and jumping in and out of the pool. Dinner can be late and the evening’s entertainment is not child orientated either. If you want to take children, look for a specialty cruise.

A cruise is relaxing and all about pampering. Luxury and pampering and world class food. I put on five pounds on a two week cruise and friends said that was abnormally little! I will tell you about the food on my last cruise.

Breakfast lasted from 7 AM to 10 AM and there was a buffet with food from all around the world: fruit, porridge, toast, bacon and eggs, ham, cornflakes and all the variations, sausages, rice, Chinese food, prawns, fish and more. Elevenses started at 11 AM and had tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits, help yourself.

Lunch was a two hour affair starting at 1PM consisting of four courses. There was a choice of set plans, but if you wanted to mix and match you could - I think the plans were only to make it easier for the elderly to make up their minds. With 1,200 people to give food to in two sittings, the waiters try to speed selection up in very subtle ways, but never outwardly. High tea was from 4 to 4:30PM: tea, coffee, cakes, biscuits and sandwiches.

Dinner was at 6:30PM and was a five course meal in the same vein as lunch and at midnight there was a barbecue on deck until 2AM. Everything that was served was first class and there was no restriction at all on how much you could eat.

Entertainment was after dinner and there were two shows to match the two dinner sittings, but you could sit there for both shows if you liked. There was a different show every night ranging from solo artistes to bands. There were theater plays and musical shows, it was very grand. There was also a piano bar playing jazz and a disco every night

I would recommend a cruise to anyone, but it is a good idea to check what sort of cruise you are booking as some are themed and if you do not like the cruise’s theme, you may not get the full enjoyment out of it.

Some Things To Enjoy About February

March 6th, 2010
by Wendy Goldsmith

Very few people look forward to February, a month that falls in the thick of winter and often leaves us feeling as if the cold weather will never end.

The good news is that there are good things that come with the month of February too. It’s simply a matter of looking forward to these events, as they’ll certainly help the shortest month of the year to go by even more quickly.

Let’s take a look at a few things to look forward to during the second month of the year. Maybe you’ll even learn about something new in the process.

First off, there are the holidays. There are a few of them, with some having more significance than others. During the second day of the month, there’s Groundhog Day, which obviously holds more novelty than anything else. Regardless, it’s a milestone in some senses as it marks the beginning of the end of winter.

If you’re a sentimental person, you’re probably already thinking about next Valentine’s Day. Still, anyone with someone special in their life should enjoy themselves this year, as the holiday falls on a Sunday. Perhaps a weekend getaway would make things interesting.

Later in the month, you may be fortunate enough to enjoy the day off for President’s Day. Depending on your job, you may get a weekday off, and hopefully you’ll make the most of this.

I’ve focused on holidays so far, but there’s a lot more to be excited about too, especially if you’re into sports. As you may well know, the olympics will take place during the month of February, and the coverage of the events should make this once every four years occasion really special.

Racing fans will also be delighted to know that NASCAR once again resumes, as the year starts off with the Daytona 500 on the second Sunday of the month.

Using Sunscreens Can Fight Sun Damage

March 1st, 2010
by James Fraksburg

Using baby oil and lying out in the sun with no protection is, hopefully, a thing of the past. There are many types of sunscreens available to make your time in the sun more safe.

If used properly, sunscreens are an effective way to get protection from the sun. The sun rays that cause the most damage are UVB and UVA rays. UVB rays usually cause a damage that is readily noticeable like a rash or sunburn. UVA do not show these signs but are just as bad for causing sun damage.

Sun protection comes in various types. Everything from creams, ointments, lotions, sprays, and even certain waxes can all be used. Some are better than other for certain areas of the body, so be sure to use the type(s) that will give you the most protection. The types of protection should all have an SPF (Sun Protection Factor). This can range anywhere from 15 up. Usually at least a 30 SPF should be applied. Some sun protections only fight against one of the types of sun rays. A broad spectrum lotion, will protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

There are some guidelines to follow to make the use of the sun protectors more effective. Application should be done at least thirty minutes before exposure to the sun. You should reapply at least every two hours, and more often if you have been swimming, sweating, or drying yourself off. An ounce of product should be used for each application, and the application should be even. If not, some areas of skin might not be protected. Using self-tanners does not negate the need for applying sun protection. They do not have a high enough SPF to be effective.

Although most people do not make the connection. Most wrinkles are caused by sun damage after extended exposure to the sun. A lack of skin protection from the dangerous rays of the sun, also accounts for many skin cancers that people suffer.

Using topical sun protection can inhibit your absorption of vitamin d that is normally gained from sun exposure. Other ways should be found to get this important vitamin in your system. Although some people believe that they are safe using tanning beds instead of lying in the sun, the tanning beds can cause just as much damage and harm as direct sun exposure.

Topical sun protection should not be used if it has expired. There should be an expiration date somewhere on the package. Snow, sand, and water can all cause problems because they tend to reflect the rays of the sun. Even on cloudy days, sun protection is a must. Harmful sun rays can still penetrate through the clouds. Always use sun protection if you are going to be outside.

Using topical sun protectors can help against sun damage, but other things should be done as well. Sunglasses with UV protection should be worn. Try to avoid sun exposure between ten in the morning and four at night, because this is when the sun is its strongest. Stay in a shady area and keep skin covered with clothing. Some detergents can be used on your clothes to improve your protection. Also wearing a big hat can help to protect your face.

Sunscreens are an excellent defense in the battle against sun damage. Using them along with following some common sense guidelines can help to protect you and your family.

The Wonders Of A Caribbean Cruise

February 26th, 2010
by Owen Jones

People work harder these days than ever before. If not physically harder then longer hours and we are entitled to a break from that once in a while. The majority of us go on holiday and we look forward to it months in advance and we plan for it even further ahead. Where do you like to go or what do you like to do? I personally prefer to go on a cruise and a Caribbean cruise is a good option.

People think a cruise, especially a Caribbean cruise as being expensive, and cruise operators want to maintain that elite image, but I see the cruise as being an up-market all inclusive holiday. In all probability, it is the first all inclusive holiday, because once you walk up and off that gang plank, everything except drinks is free. Everything and everything is first class hotel style too! We are not talking pizza and chips here, but five or six course meals and five or six times a day.

It is common knowledge, that if you go on a cruise you can expect to put on a pound or two a week (I put on five pounds on my last cruise), unless you do some exercise. What exercise? Cruise liners have swimming pools and gymnasiums! Not only one but several. Some even set aside a deck for running at certain times of the day. There really is no justification for not exercising on a Caribbean cruise.

Caribbean cruise liners provide more sports facilities than just gymnastics too. In fact, except for horse riding, I think that most sports are catered for. Basketball, volleyball, swimming, clay pigeon shooting, fishing, bird watching … You name it. Caribbean cruise liners also have Internet connections, games machines and full office amenities. During the evenings there are first class shows, often two a night, films in a cinema and a casino.

If you have never been on a Caribbean cruise, it is hard to explain the amount of luxury that is provided. It is more than a first class hotel. In a first class hotel, you pay first class prices for everything too, but on a Caribbean cruise liner, everything but drinks is free and even drinks are cheap because they are duty-free. The cruise liner will have a store too where everything it sells is duty free!

Some Caribbean cruises are themed and it is worth noting this fact. Also some times of the year, especially early February are foreseeable. I once naively went on a Caribbean cruise for a fortnight which spanned St Valentine’s day. I was a single man then and the other 1200 were romantic couples. There was only one single woman on the cruise but there was no rapport between us. I did not not enjoy that Caribbean cruise, because people took we under their wing, but it made me think about the time of year when I next booked up.

Caribbean cruises, particularly the better ones, will fill up quickly, so this is one holiday that you really ought to book well in advance. A year in advance is not too early. I like to book my Caribbean cruise a year in advance, but put my name down for any last minute cancellations, in case I can pick up a bargain.

Sport Mascot Designs And Their Impact On Sports Teams

February 25th, 2010
by Adriana Noton

The idea behind mascots is to select something for a competitive team, an animal, person or thing that is somehow supposed to bring the team good luck. It is not always about emulating the traits the selected mascots embody, although that may be the origins. It’s easy to see why a football team might want to call itself the Rams or the Tigers, but sport mascot designs include a wide range of things, even colors.

It may be more accurate to consider that the mascot is something to rally around, something that brings the community in closer association with the team. It’s a way for the fans of the team to identify with the players on the field. School colors work in much the same way. If the team has selected an animal like a cougar as its mascot, then you are likely to see all manner of representation of cougars for the fans. From shirts to jackets and shoes to key chains, the image of the cougar marks those who carry or wear them as fans that support that team.

Some might consider it simply a clever marketing ploy, one facet of sports promotion. Revenue generated from the sale of mascot emblazoned trinkets and gear provides a means to defray the cost of travel and equipment for the team itself. Alumni are certainly another source of revenue, and they absolutely love their mascots. It is from the alumnus, that usually seen a more extreme form of mascot collection.

The mascot seems to be more than just that, the commercial side pales when compared to the motivational possibilities. The mascot doesn’t just give team a name, It gives them an identity. Even when they’re not practicing on the field were actually playing a game is not unusual for the players to wear the jacket’s emblazoned with their mascot everywhere. It becomes a part of their persona, who they are.

Likewise, fans absolutely love to wear jerseys like the ones the players sport on the field. The more closely they resemble the actual jerseys, the more coveted they are. Fans even choose their favorite player, and wear jerseys with their players name emblazoned on the back. It is a show of camaraderie and belonging.

For many universities, the mascot is a part of the history and culture of the school, deeply ingrained in the student body. The mascot along with the trophies in the glory case proudly displayed in the ministration buildings even play a role in recruiting. Ironically, the exact history of the mascots has been long lost. But no matter every school will have a story behind its mascot. The United States Air Force Academy is a reasonably young university, and he chose as its mascot the falcon. That they selected a bird is probably not a surprise because the falcon because it is known as the fighter jet of the avian world.

But not everything about mascots is without controversy. Names and references to items, religious practices and tribes of Native Americans have long caused friction. In 2005, the incidental aseptic for how they use of these mascots. They may be detained is a Native American symbol or name as a mascot from participating in a championship game under their jurisdiction.

One of the effective universities with Florida State, whose mascot, the Seminole, named after the Seminole tribe of the southeastern United States, would make them ineligible, threatened to sue the NCAA. What made this conflict interesting is the Seminole tribes within Florida loudly supported FSUs use of the icon. Seminole tribes outside of Florida were very much against it. It’s a clear example of the emotions sport mascot designs can generate, which is precisely what they are suppose to do.

Choosing Between Swimming Pool Cleaners

February 6th, 2010
by Jay Berg

I have 3 swimming pools Covina pool requires quite a bit of ongoing maintenance, if you want your pool to stay in good working order. People have pools for different reasons; to keep in shape, to relax in, for entertaining friends and family, and to have something fun for the kids to enjoy. No matter what purpose your pool is serving, it’s wise to make sure to check out swimming pool cleaners when purchasing a pool of your own.

You need to consider the area you live in and if it will contribute to a lot of debris landing in your pool. For instance, if you live in an extremely windy location, there will constantly be large pieces of debris blowing through the air, as well as tons of small particles floating on the surface of the water. The descriptions provided below are for many popular models of pool cleaners on today’s market.

Skimmers are for all Types of Pools- By catching the dirt and debris before it can sink to the bottom, this pool cleaner makes it much easier to maintain water clarity. It is easy to hook this skimmer directly to the existing filtration system of the pool. This will enable the skimmer to suck up the floating dirt and debris, then it will send it into the filtration system. When this debris sets on top of the surface for a long enough period of time, it will then sink and become even harder to clean out.

These will work in both flat bottomed pools and ones that have a dished out bottom in them. Since most above ground pools come with their own unique filtration system, this pool cleaner will actually work off of that filtering system. So that this little machine doesn’t slam into the sides of the pool, there is a bumper ring around the outer edge of it. There is some minor installation required with this type of cleaner, but it only takes about ten minutes of your time.

Most people tend to think that this filtration system that comes with the pool is all that is needed and pool cleaners are only required for in-ground pools. This type of cleaner will scrub away anything that seems to be adhering to the sides and bottom of the pool, then vacuum it out. Whether the bottom of the pool is dished out or flat, this pool cleaner will take care of the entire area.

In-Ground Pool Cleaners- You couldn’t ask for a more perfect piece of equipment. These are able to be used without any hassle, there’s no installation required, and they are completely automatic. The hardest part will be trying to find a nearby outlet to plug this type of cleaner into. Once you get it plugged in, turned on, and dropped into the pool, you can go relax.

Skimmers for Any Type of Pool- Using one of these pool cleaners that float on top of the water can prevent dirt and debris from building up on the bottom of the pool. These machines attach directly into the existing filtration system of the pool and suck water off the top of the water, then direct it into the filtration system. While they are only able to remove dirt and debris that are floating on the water’s surface, this is where most of the debris first collects. It is this floating debris that becomes saturated and sinks to the bottom.

When purchasing or building a pool, making sure to have a choice between swimming pool cleaners is helpful. Be sure to read up on all the various brands and find one that suits you, your pool, and your budget.

Should I Use Sunscreens And Why?

February 4th, 2010
by Phil Zertisky

Simply put, everybody should! Not all skin is the same. The amount of pigment in the skin varies from person to person. That is why some people will have higher sensitivity to the sun and burn easily, and never tan. Some people will experience a little bit of tanning but a lot of burning. Then there are those who tan easily and quickly yet rarely burn. It seems to make sense that for those who are not as sun-sensitive there should be less worry about sun exposure. Unfortunately that is not the case. While some people are not prone to sunburns, they are still at risk of developing melanoma, the most prevalent form of skin cancer. Nobody is immune to the risk and everyone should wear sunscreens!

Why? The sun’s rays consist of two types of hazardous ultra-violet rays, UVA and UVB. The UVB rays are the ones that cause the sunburn. Of course with each sunburn a person gets, his or her chances of skin cancer are increased. That is not the only danger. There are also the UVA rays to consider. These rays do not cause burning but they do penetrate deeper into the skin, affecting the body’s immune system and stifling how it combats cancer. Both kinds of UV rays do their part in increasing cancer risks.

Just because you aren’t actually burning, the risk is still there. Every time you are exposed to the sun, you are exposed to these ultra-violet rays. Sunscreens are made to block out the UVA and UVB rays. Applying a sun block is important no matter how much time you will be spent in the sun, not just if you plan to be outside for a long time or lying at the beach.

This includes walking to and from your car! Even spending a few minutes in the sun will contribute to the risk. While UVB rays, those that cause the skin to burn, cannot penetrate glass, UVA rays CAN. This means that even when you are sitting inside, you are still exposing your skin to harmful sun rays.

If you question this, consider ‘driver’s arm.’ This is the occurrence of a person having one arm tanner than the other. This arm is not red, or burned; it is tan. Even a very fair-skinned person whose skin won’t normally tan will have this happen. It is from sun coming in the car window. The burning UVB rays are not getting through the glass but the skin-penetrating UVA rays are. These rays are actually just as harmful than those that cause the burn.

So sunscreens are important to block out these rays. What about the SPF factor? SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a calculation of the time it takes the skin to burn. It compares skin with the sunblock to skin without the sunblock. For example, an SPF 10 on a person who normally burns in 10 minutes, will increase the time it takes for that person to burn to 100 minutes.

Along with a high SPF, you will also want to check for ray-blocking ingredients. Octyl methoxycinnamate, Octyl salicylate, Oxybenzone, Avobenzone, Cinoxate, Ecamsule, Menthyl anthranilate, Sulisobenzone, Titanium dioxide, and Zinc oxide are some of the effective ones to look for.

Limiting your exposure to the sun’s rays is the key to preventing skin cancer. Wear a hat, long pants and long sleeves, seek out shade whenever possible, and always wear your sunscreens!
